CHARLOTTE, N.C. – ‘The Color Purple’ hits the big screen Christmas Day, starring NC native Fantasia Barrino

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — “The Color Purple,” featuring Fantasia Barrino, a native of North Carolina and a Golden Globe nominee, will be released in theaters on Christmas Day. This musical drama is an adaptation of the Broadway musical and novel written by Alice Walker. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, David Allan Grier, and even a special appearance by Whoopi Goldberg.

The producers of this film include Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, and Oprah Winfrey, who also starred in the 1985 adaptation of the movie.

In this reboot, Barrino takes on the role of Celie. Interestingly, this is not her first time portraying Celie, as she previously played the character in the Broadway version of the show from 2005 to 2008, shortly after winning “American Idol” in 2003.

Over the weekend, Barrino and other actors attended a screening of the film at the Regal Stonecrest at Piper Glen. When asked about the significance of having the screening in her home state of North Carolina rather than in Los Angeles, Barrino expressed that it holds a much deeper meaning for her.

“The Color Purple” is currently being shown in theaters nationwide.
