Sports News: Clare veteran Cathal O’Connor calls time on 14-year Banner football career

Sports News: Mark Fitzgerald, the newly appointed manager of Clare football, has received a significant setback for the upcoming 2024 season. Cathal O’Connor, a seasoned midfielder for Banner county, has decided to bring an end to his long and illustrious inter-county career. O’Connor has been a constant presence in Clare’s midfield for the past 14 years, and his expertise in that crucial area of the field will be sorely missed as Fitzgerald aims to build upon the impressive groundwork laid by Colm Collins over the last decade.

Not only has O’Connor been a linchpin for Clare, but he has also played a pivotal role in Ballyea’s remarkable achievements in hurling in recent years. His contributions have been instrumental in Clare’s ascent under Collins, transforming them into a formidable force in Division 2 of the League and beyond, following their Division 3 title win in 2016.

Furthermore, O’Connor’s retirement will mark a significant milestone in the 2024 season. It will be the first time since 1948 that no footballer who played with or under the legendary Mick O’Dwyer will feature. O’Connor had the privilege of playing under the esteemed Mick O’Dwyer during his brief tenure as manager in 2013.
